Intro

The Motivation

Terroir was created as a UX course graduation project. Aiming to challenge myself - I was lucky to collaborate with Bar, a friend, a great cook and the owner of Livne Winery. A small family owned winery located in Sde Moshe.

About

Terroir is a winery management system for winemakers and employees alike, created to help simplify complex processes, such as: tracking fermentations, organizing supplies and issuing work-orders.

Terroir was created during UX design course at Netcraft Academy. Therefore, it focuses mainly on UX principles and methodologies.

Empathize & Define

Starting this project, I knew very little about wine-making. I used qualitative research methods in order to learn: interviewed two winemakers (from wineries of different scale) and two employees (with different professional experience). Independent learning on the subject was necessary as well.

Main Problems

Lack of Work Protocols

  • Winemakers rely on their memory of work protocols and treatments.
  • Documentation for the season is physical only - whiteboard and paper lab results.

Information Overload

  • Information from the labs and employees to winemakers is  delayed.
  • Assignments are given inefficiently in various ways.

Kosher Wine Regulations

Wine is used in many Jewish ceremonies. Secular winemakers wanting to produce Kosher wine can’t have any direct contact with the wine (for religious reasons).

Ideat & Prototype

After identifying the main problems, I approached low fidelity paper-prototype and sketching, using the 6-Up method to come up with different ideas for certain features/screens.

Test & Implement

The Idea behind the Alert Flow, was to test the possibility of remote management while the system notifies the employee about a problem in the fermentation process.

My Challenges

Person

Real Client

I learned about the importance of ongoing communication with the client & users while designing a complex B2B system. Especially when offering a solution to an expert from a different professional field.

Complex Layout

It was the first time I attempted to design a desktop interface, which has different set requirements and opportunities.
